This backlit image was captured in mid-February at the Cactus Garden in Joshua Tree National Park. The photograph was created shooting straight into the sun whilst shielding the lens from the rays thus avoiding lens flare. The chollas are also known as Jumping Cactus as regards the tenacious ability or the plant to attach itself to anything that moves near it, seemingly without touching it. The spines are barbed making them very difficult to remove.

I was born and raised in New England and met my Canadian wife of nearly 50 years now while traveling in Europe in '73. I have mostly lived in Canada since. I have been interested in photography since 1970 and had taken multitudes of pictures in the "film" age. After a time away from photography, I jumped in again in the early years of the "digital" age. I graduated from the New York Institute of Photography in 2007. Since, I spent a couple of years as a part time professional photographer, though I am moving away from working to return to my roots in outdoor photography as a life interest. I enjoy taking landscape, moving water, and nature images - and any other passing fancy moment that deserves to last. I love quiet wild spaces...

Great shot, very stark and ominous -- I can just imagine them waiting to launch their spines into me :-)
