Description
This image shows a pastoral view of a quiet corner, devoid of any ruins, in January 2016 at Pompeii, Italy. Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples, in the Campania region of Italy, in the territory of the comune of Pompeii. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The site has been largely excavated to reveal city as it was just prior to eruption. In the distant background you can see the specter of Vesuvius looming. This image has been digitally processed.
