This coastal image was captured in mid-January at a regional park in East Sooke, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada not far from Victoria. The site is at Aylar's Farm where in days gone by there was a full fledged agriculture operation. This was another gray day with much moisture in the air, but pleasant enough to have such a great space to oneself. There are arbutus trees on the right side of the frame. They do not lose their leaves in the fall, and yet the bark peels off in paper thin pieces to expose a beautifully grained wood which looks great when it's wet. Arbutus trees are native to the region and can be found nearly everywhere in small patches. They can grow very large and into incredible looking shapes.

I was born and raised in New England and met my Canadian wife of nearly 50 years now while traveling in Europe in '73. I have mostly lived in Canada since. I have been interested in photography since 1970 and had taken multitudes of pictures in the "film" age. After a time away from photography, I jumped in again in the early years of the "digital" age. I graduated from the New York Institute of Photography in 2007. Since, I spent a couple of years as a part time professional photographer, though I am moving away from working to return to my roots in outdoor photography as a life interest. I enjoy taking landscape, moving water, and nature images - and any other passing fancy moment that deserves to last. I love quiet wild spaces...
