Artist's Description

This image of Newfoundland Ponies was captured in June of 2023 on conservation land near Bay Roberts and on Conception Bay. This breed has become CRITICALLY ENDANGERED AND IS FACING EXTINCTION. ALL PROCEEDS FROM THE SALE OF THESE IMAGES WILL BE FORWARDED TO THE NEWFOUNDLAND PONY SOCIETY TO AID IN THEIR EFFORTS TO PREVENT THE FURTHER DETERIORATION AND EXTINCTION OF THE BREED. Please read below for more information on these beautiful animals.

Pony Facts from the Newfoundland Pony Society
1. They evolved from ponies that settlers brought with them from the British Isles sometime in the 1600’s including 8 breeds including Connemara, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Fell, Galloway, Highland, New Forest, and Welsh pony.
2. They have unique physical survival traits: their hooded eyes keep snow, rain and pests out; their tails are low set to allow rain and snow to fall off easily and their ears are small and furry to help prevent frostbite and keep bugs out.

Allan Van Gasbeck

I was born and raised in New England and met my Canadian wife of nearly 50 years now while traveling in Europe in '73. I have mostly lived in Canada since. I have been interested in photography since 1970 and had taken multitudes of pictures in the "film" age. After a time away from photography, I jumped in again in the early years of the "digital" age. I graduated from the New York Institute of Photography in 2007. Since, I spent a couple of years as a part time professional photographer, though I am moving away from working to return to my roots in outdoor photography as a life interest. I enjoy taking landscape, moving water, and nature images - and any other passing fancy moment that deserves to last. I love quiet wild spaces...
