Artist's Description

This image was captured at Cibola National Wildlife Refuge near Blythe in southern California in January of 2019. The photograph depicts many Sandhill Cranes, enjoying remnants of the corn harvest in a field that was cultivated just for them. Quizically, they seem neither bothered nor fettered by the flock of blackbirds that want the same piece of real estate as they share and share alike, although there are acres more of these fields. This park is located on a major migration flyway providing a safe haven for tens of thousands of migrating and wintering birds making it a bird watchers paradise.

Featured in the FAA group American Desert Southwest Flora and Fauna. April 2019.

About Allan Van Gasbeck

Allan Van Gasbeck

I was born and raised in New England and met my Canadian wife of nearly 50 years now while traveling in Europe in '73. I have mostly lived in Canada since. I have been interested in photography since 1970 and had taken multitudes of pictures in the "film" age. After a time away from photography, I jumped in again in the early years of the "digital" age. I graduated from the New York Institute of Photography in 2007. Since, I spent a couple of years as a part time professional photographer, though I am moving away from working to return to my roots in outdoor photography as a life interest. I enjoy taking landscape, moving water, and nature images - and any other passing fancy moment that deserves to last. I love quiet wild spaces...
